Pharmacist advice
Head lice
Head lice are common in children. They do not mean a home is dirty. Treatment is for the person who has live lice. This page does not replace a pharmacist choosing the product.
A pharmacist cannot prescribe for this from this page.
What usually helps
- Check the hair for live lice. A pharmacist can help you choose a treatment such as permethrin or dimethicone and explain how to repeat it.
- Wash recent pillowcases and hats in hot water. You do not need to spray the house.
Talk to a pharmacist first
- A baby or toddler, someone who is pregnant, or a treatment that did not work.
- Broken skin on the scalp.
See a doctor or call 911
- The scalp is very swollen, painful, or has pus. See a doctor or nurse.
